I went tailgaiting at a Huskies game this past Saturday for the first time in about 8 years... In my defense, I had been at school in Connecticut and then living abraod in China during that time. But I had always remained a (fairly) stalwart Seattle sports fan.
What I witnessed there saddened me. Sure, the 35-28 loss to the Cardinal (singular) stung. But I never went to the UW so I don't have those deep ties to the programme that a lot of the Husky faithful possess. What I do bemoan, however, is the fall from Rose Bowl grace over the past ten years. Never has this programme been laid so low.
There could, for that matter, be no worse time in the past 30 odd years to come back to Seattle in terms of its sports culture. The Sonics are gone. The Huskies are a shell of the programme they were pre-Hobert boosters. The Mariners just posted a 100+ loss season. The lone bright spot are the Seahawks, who boast a 1-2 record, including a loss to San Franscisco (with JT O'Sullivan at the helm).
So I am wondering to myself (and now out loud) exactly what has happened in the past 10 years that has led to this sorry state of affairs. Over the next few weeks, I am going to be looking at three out of our four major athletic associations here in the greater Seattle area (sorry to the Sounders FC, not "major" yet) in detail to try to determine where exactly everything went so wrong. Terribly wrong, might I add.
